June 7, 2023: Cash-strapped Bangladesh shut its biggest power plant on Monday. The country was unable to afford the coal to fuel its government-run Payra Power Plant. The 1,320-megawatt power plant in southern Bangladesh had already slashed production last month due to fuel shortages. The move comes at a time when the country is already struggling with a sweltering heatwave that has created surging electricity demand. The country has already been facing long hours of power cuts for weeks now.
